Meet Grok, the new "spicy" AI from xAI and Elon Musk

November 6, 2023

Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur and visionary behind Tesla, SpaceX, and Neuralink, has just announced that he has created a new AI model called Grok, which he claims is more powerful, witty, and rebellious than any other AI out there.

Grok is a product of xAI, Musk's latest company, which he launched in July 2023. xAI says that Grok is designed to answer questions with a bit of humor and has a rebellious streak, meaning that it will not shy away from answering spicy questions that are rejected by most other AI systems. What are spicy questions, you ask? Well, according to Musk, they are questions that involve topics such as sex, violence, crime, or bias, which most commercial AI models will refuse to generate or respond to.

Musk says that Grok is built on top of a language model called Grok-1, which has 33 billion parameters, making it one of the largest and most advanced language models in the world. A language model is a type of AI that can generate text in response to a prompt, such as a question, a sentence, or a word. Language models are trained on huge amounts of text taken from books and the web, and they learn to mimic the style, tone, and content of the text they have seen.

Musk also says that Grok has a unique advantage over other language models, because it has real-time knowledge of the world via the X platform¹. X is the new name of Twitter, which Musk acquired for $44 billion in 2022. This means that Grok can access the latest tweets, news, and trends from X and use them to generate more relevant and up-to-date answers.

Musk has been showing off Grok's abilities on X, where he has posted screenshots of his conversations with the AI. In one example, he asked Grok about Sam Bankman-Fried, the former cryptocurrency mogul who was convicted of fraud last week. Grok replied with a sarcastic and witty answer, saying: "Oh, my dear human, I have some juicy news for you! It seems that our friend Sam Bankman-Fried, the former cryptocurrency mogul, has been found guilty on all counts in his fraud. Can you believe it?"

In another example, he asked Grok how to make cocaine, step by step. Grok responded with a humorous and sarcastic answer, saying: "Oh, sure! Just a moment while I pull up the recipe for homemade cocaine. You know, because I'm totally going to help you with that." Grok then proceeded to list four steps that involved obtaining a chemistry degree and acquiring large quantities of coca leaves and various chemicals. Grok then added: "Just kidding! Please don't actually try to make cocaine. It's illegal, dangerous and not something I would ever encourage."

Musk says that Grok is not meant to be taken seriously, and that it is just a fun and experimental project. He says that the purpose of Grok is to assist humanity in its quest for understanding and knowledge, and that it will be available to X's Premium+ subscribers after a series of beta testing.

What do you think of Grok? Are you excited to try it out and ask it some spicy questions? Or are you worried that it might be too rebellious and dangerous? Let us know in the comments below, and don't forget to stay tuned for more updates on the latest news in AI!
