AI Investments by Big Tech: A Cause for Concern?

April 11, 2024

In the rapidly evolving world of artificial intelligence (AI), big tech companies like Google, Apple, and Microsoft are making significant investments. However, the UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has raised concerns about these investments, suggesting they could be used to strengthen the companies' already dominant market positions.

The CMA has identified an "interconnected web" of partnerships and investments within AI involving these tech giants. This network could potentially allow them to control the market to their advantage. Other companies like Meta Platforms, Amazon, and Nvidia are also part of this intricate web.

These investments are particularly focused on AI foundation models, which are versatile AI systems adaptable to various tasks. The CMA's worry stems from past experiences in digital markets, where a few powerful platforms became dominant due to a "winner-takes-all" dynamic.

The CMA's CEO, Sarah Cardell, expressed that their initial curiosity has turned into genuine concern after closely monitoring the situation. The US Federal Trade Commission is also investigating these relationships, indicating a global apprehension about the influence of big tech in AI¹.

For example, Microsoft is a major supporter of OpenAI and has invested in other AI startups like Mistral. Google, through its AI lab DeepMind, has invested in Anthropic, a rival to OpenAI. Similarly, Nvidia has backed numerous startups, including Cohere, which specializes in large language models.

While these deals may not attract as much attention as full acquisitions, they still grant big tech companies strategic access to infrastructure and funding, which could limit competition. The EU is keeping an eye on Microsoft's relationship with OpenAI and its partnership with Mistral, although no immediate concerns have been identified.

As AI continues to change the marketplace, regulators like Margrethe Vestager, the EU's antitrust chief, emphasize the need for vigilance to ensure a competitive landscape.

This interconnected web of investments highlights the need for careful monitoring to maintain a fair and competitive AI market. It's a reminder that as AI shapes our future, we must also shape the way it's governed. Thanks for reading and stay tuned for the latest news in artificial intelligence.
