AI can spot breast cancer earlier than doctors, study says

October 25, 2023

Breast cancer is one of the most common and deadly types of cancer among women. Early detection and treatment can make a big difference in survival and quality of life. But how can we find breast cancer before it becomes too advanced?

A new study from Norway has some exciting news: artificial intelligence (AI) can help predict breast cancer up to two years before diagnosis. AI is a type of computer software that can learn from data and perform tasks that normally require human intelligence.

The researchers used a commercially available AI system called Transpara to analyze mammograms, which are X-ray images of the breast. They compared the AI scores with the actual diagnosis of more than 2,000 women who had breast cancer detected by screening or between screenings.

They found that the AI system gave a high-risk score of 10 to more than 38% of the women who had breast cancer detected by screening and more than 39% of the women who had breast cancer detected between screenings. This means that the AI system could have alerted the doctors and the women about the possibility of breast cancer much earlier than the current methods.

The researchers also found that the AI system gave a high-risk score of 10 to 23% of the women who had breast cancer detected by screening and 23.4% of the women who had breast cancer detected between screenings four years before diagnosis. This is even more impressive, as it shows that the AI system can spot subtle signs of breast cancer that are too difficult for the human eye to see. The study's co-author, Solveig Hofvind, said that this could lead to less aggressive treatment and fewer side effects for the patients, as well as better quality of life. She also said that they were surprised by the results, which show the potential of AI to detect breast cancer earlier than today.

This study is a great example of how AI can improve health care and save lives. AI is not here to replace doctors, but to help them make better decisions and provide better care for their patients. We hope to see more studies like this in the future, and more applications of AI in medicine. Check out the source article below for more details.
